I love thanksgiving for reasons of syntax. Break it down and it’s “thanks” “giving”. Easy. Take the politics away and it becomes simply a day to honor giving thanks. A day for gratitude.
This year will challenge us. You know that. So I challenge you to look for ways to make it better than you think it can be.
Here are 3 simple techniques to help you give thanks:
- Meditate – Meditation is simply sitting or even laying down and directing your attention on one thing. Choose one thing you are grateful for and put your focus there. Allow your mind to stop and stay with gratitude. Set a timer and prepare yourself to be guided into greatness with a clear mind and elevated spirit.
- Practice kindness. No matter how hard things get, you can improve them with kindness. It helps the world and helps us all be in the world in a better way. Give thanks for all the kind people in the world and try a random act of kindness for yourself. Notice how you change. Then say thanks for that. When you help others, you feel better in yourself.
- Be the change you want to see in the world. Thanksgiving is a great moment to look for ways to make a change in our world. You want the world to be more gentle? Be more gentle with someone. Give them a call. You want the world to be more giving? Give. You want the world to practice more yoga? Practice more and invite a friend. And whether your class is online or in person, be grateful you can practice at all. Shift your awareness to how you can be the change and you’ll see that change in front of you.
We’ve all had a challenging year. If we look for ways to be thankful for what we have and give thanks for it, it may take the edge off as we enter the next challenging year. I’m grateful for all of you and for my wonderful challenging life.
