What’s love got to do with it?
My new friend Omar recently shared a quote from Hafiz with me. He said, “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, “You owe me”. Look what happens with a love like that. It lights the whole sky.”
February is often called the love month. Perhaps 2021 could be donned the love year as we fall in love with this new person we’re being asked to become. Everything’s changed. Let it be invigorating. Let it carve out or allow out that new individual, that flexible, nurturing, creative person who’s the only person who’ll come out of this intact.
How do you find that inner spirit? Simply by loving who you are and how far you’ve come. How to love yourself? In the smallest of ways. Sit with yourself for a cup of coffee in the morning rather than rushing into your day. Call a friend unexpectedly. Ask for help. Send a gift in the mail. Practice random acts of loving kindness. Yesterday I received a hand delivered package from a mutual friend who’d been in lockdown since last year. I cried feeling so loved. They thought of me in all their trauma. Let’s spread those kind of tears in 2021. Think of others. Cry tears of joy, friendship and love. February’s a good month to start.
This is a test. Will you shout “you owe me” to the world or will you embrace the person you can and must become since shouting never let anyone hear your voice.
